Our WWB Founder, Laura Frater, tells you how she went from being afraid to run for 30 seconds to running 13.2 miles in the Berkeley Half Marathon.
This post is all about 5 Life-Changing Things I Learnt Training for a Half Marathon
1. Small Steps Equal Long Distances
The idea of running for more than 30 seconds literally made me want to cry less than two years ago. But that’s where I started.
I would run for 30 seconds one day, 60 seconds the next, 90 seconds the next… until I could run for 30 minutes straight.
Once I could run for 30 minutes, I went back to square one and approached the distance aspect of a run. I increased milage by about half a mile each run until I could run 10 miles straight.
A helpful hint: cross train. It’s really important to strengthen all parts of your body when you’re getting into running.
2. Running Saves Your Mental Health
You think you have a huge problem? Go for a run. See how big that problem looks once you’re done.
Trust me, your mental health vastly approves post cardio.
3. Training = Reading Books (Yes, Really!)
Okay, so not reading books. But running gives you the perfect opportunity to listen to a tonne of audiobooks.
4. Just Start
The thing with running – and anything that you’re scared to do – is that you only get started once you get started.
If you’ve never run before, then just start. Even if you have, just start. You’re either running or you’re not.
Even once you’ve done a half marathon, running doesn’t feel good most of the time (trust me), but it’s the mental accomplishment of pushing through the suffering that makes running so incredible.
5. It’s One Foot In Front Of The Other
Running any distance is a good metaphor for life: it’s one foot in front of the other.
The mental resilience that I’ve definitely developed from running long distances has really helped me in all aspects of my life.
