I’ve been so blessed to live in lots of places: London, Sydney, Melbourne, New York and San Francisco. As a result, I’ve made some incredible long lasting friendships. As we near the beginning of the new year, I want to share my three tried and true strategies for forming the most genuine, loyal and fun friend group.
This post is all about how to pick your friends in 2024.
- Find people who value human connection over material things. As one get older and make more money, I’ve watched people bond over stuff and experiences rather than people. Don’t get me wrong, I love shopping, I want nice stuff. I want a house and good healthcare and amazing vacations. But I don’t want those things if mean only hanging out with people who can afford it too.
- As yourself: do my friends make me a better person? My closest friends challenge me. They call me out when I fall short. They inspire me to do better at work, at my relationship, and at our friendship.
- Choose friends who confront their problems/goals/challenges/obstacles. None of us are perfect, we all avoid obstacles from time to time. But pick friends who don’t procrastinate and avoid their goals and issues! Not cool. Not fun. Not a sign of a reliable friend.
