This post is all about the Small Home Office | 5 Affordable Tips For Designing Your Home Work Space
1. Prioritize Light
My husband’s been working in the nook of our apartment for a while. It’s a great little space, but it’s not directly near a window. My little work space, however, is just a side table against the wall facing directly to a window. The difference in how I feel when I’m working in my spot is amazing. I feel like my body is adjusting to the timeline of the day so much better. My stress levels feel a little lower.
2. Add Some Greenery
When you’re getting to that point in the day when work is feeling like a drag, a few pieces of greenery truly waken you up. (Watering a plant part way through the day also encourages you to get up and walk around!) I highly recommend low maintenance plants like a spider plant. They don’t require too much water and they normally survive if you neglect them(!) If a real plant feels like too much of a commitment, why not invest in a bunch of flowers each week, or a faux plant?
3. Give Everything a Spot
What do you need for your work? A laptop? Stationary? Note pad? Whatever you need, try and find containers and/or spots on your desk for those items. The more organized your space, the better you’ll feel. Containers do not need to be pricey. Try using a mug or mason jar for pens and pencils, for example. I also recommend having a couple of coasters on your desk. They’ll remind you to keep hydrated. The last spot I recommend creating is space for your phone. There are all kinds of cute phone holders you can find online. If you don’t need your cell phone nearby for work, why not allocate a spot for it away from your desk? On days where I don’t need mine, I keep it on a little tray on my dining room table. It’s on loud if someone calls or messages, so I can still hear it go off, but removing it from my desk removes a potential distracton.
4. Calendars
How many times a week do you end up squinting at your laptop or phone to remind yourself of the date? Instead of giving yourself more screen time, and creating another element to your home office space, purchase or create a physical calendar. A white board with calendar markings is perfect, or try a block or standing calendar. You can find really affordable options on Amazon.
5. Display Inspiring Images
Find a selection of personal photos to display, or images that make you feel motivated, and place them in your home office space. It’s a great reminder that there is so much beyond your job that matters. Vision boards are also a great way to liven up your desk area. I have a vision board that’s a mixture of pictures and actual “to dos” for the year. It’s super motivating to look up and see not only inspiring images, but see my goals slowly being crossed off. You can also consider adding motivational or seasonal framed quotes.
