Box cookies are fabulous. (“Real bakers” love to look down their nose at a box cookie mix!) But I love box cookies recipes. This post explains how you can easily elevate box cookies and make them taste homemade.

Box cookie mix hacks
If you want to make your box cookies taste like perfectly homemade cookies, here are some tried and tested tips!
1. Add extra flavors
When in doubt, eyeball extra flavors, like vanilla essence, maple, almond or cinnamon, to add some dimension to your cookies’ taste.
2. Decorate your cookies
Personally, I love topping my box cookies with cream cheese frosting. Or, better yet, taking two cookies, putting frosting “in the middle” and making a cookie sandwich!
3. Use unsalted butter
Always pick unsalted butter over margarine if your box recipe advises margarine.
4. Add sour cream
If you want extra soft and doughy cookies, add 3/4 of a cup of sour cream to your mixture.
5. Mix in new ingredients
When I say new ingredients, I mean add ons like chocolate chips, M&Ms, nuts and/or dried fruit. The sky is the limit! Personally, I love to add in a cup of whatever extra ingredient I’m including in my mixture.
6. Undercook them
When you think of homemade cookies, you probably thinking of cookies straight out the oven that are a little brown on the edges and almost gooey in the middle!
7. Add some color
Try adding a simple food dye to your box cookie dough to make your cookies look a little cuter and more interesting.
7. Go sprink-ly or go home
I recommend coating your pre cooked box cookie dough with some fun sprinkles of any flavor to give them that homemade look and touch.
